Roots

Inspired by batik art. Batik art is a decorative technique to paint textiles. Batik Art has great symbolism in both motifs and colors.

Javanese believe that all events and objects are imbued with the same all-encompassing divine energy that forms the link between earthly existence and the cosmic order. This feeling is reflected in the ancient Javanese mysticism. A mysticism that seeks to achieve personal harmony with the divine origin. There are hundreds of different currents Javanese mysticism, all pursuing the same goal in their own way.

The aunts in the batikkerij...
My grandfather is originally from Indonesia, then the Dutch East Indies. The Indonesion culture and art have always inspired me. Because of my grandfather's stories about his aunts batikkerij I became more interested in batik art.
I've been in love with the patterns and colors of batik art for as long as i can remember, but the history and symbolism of batik art also have many stories to tell. The closer look i took added an extra dimension to my creative process.  I came to realize that my art is more inspired by my history and my far east ancestors then i thought. Now i'm conscious and proud of the people that created before me. I feel that my work has reconnected me with my roots. The works in this *Roots* serie are digital creations based on pencil drawings. The works shown above are available as art prints.

Semen motif is a set of symbolic motifs that refer to the meaning of the word 'shooting' or 'grow'. This motif contains so much symbolism that it represents both fertility and for the Javanese belief in a cosmic order (Elliot McCabe, 1984).
